About the music:
From The Understory (release date: 21st April 2023) is an exploration of our relationship with plants and our role in the ecosystems with live in. Created as part of Alice Boyd's artist residency at the Eden Project, this collection of songs brings together the human voice, electronic textures created with plants and field recordings to tell the story of civilisation at a tipping point.
In 2021, Alice spent a week in the Rainforest Biome with her hand-crafted Arduino device recording plant conductivity data, which fluctuates as water moves around the leaves. She ‘sonified’ this into music, using synthesisers to voice variations in the data. This plant music is the foundation of the EP, appearing as the opening electronic bed in ‘Separation’ and intricate melodies heard on later tracks.
Since Alice’s residency, she has performed ‘From The Understory’ in the Eden Project’s Rainforest Biome, and has been featured on BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 6 and BBC Radio 3’s ‘Secrets of the Scottish Rainforest’.
Sustainability:
The EP is pressed onto Eco-Mix, a 100% recycled compound made from trimmed flash and leftovers from any colour which cannot otherwise be reused. The trimmed flash is the excess vinyl that is trimmed off after the vinyl puck is pressed, and the leftover colour granulate is usually from 2 or 3 colour effect discs that cannot be reused into single colour discs. This method produces a unique look and colour for each vinyl, cutting down on waste and making each record individual. The colour you receive will be a lucky dip, and can range from sea green to ruby red!
