The Sounds of King's Cross • Spatial Sound Installation • Kings Place
2025 | Narrator, Producer & Composer
First presented at Kings Place, Saturday 5th April 2025
as part of the Earth Unwrapped programme
The Sounds of King’s Cross is an immersive spatial sound installation exploring the green and blue spaces tucked between the bricks and bustle of King’s Cross. From rippling water in Camley Street Natural Park to conversations on a floating bookshop, this work invites you to pause, listen, and reimagine the rhythms of urban nature.
Presented using d&b audiotechnik’s Soundscape system, the piece blends field recordings, interviews, and music into a multi-layered sound world you can walk through with your ears.
Where was it recorded?
The installation was created from original sound recordings and interviews captured across three much-loved spaces in King’s Cross:
Camley Street Natural Park – a nature reserve in the heart of the city
Global Generation – a community organisation working with young people and green spaces
Word on the Water – a floating bookshop and gathering place for stories and song
What’s it about?
At its core, The Sounds of King's Cross is a celebration of how nature lives alongside us—even in the most urban corners of London. It’s also about the people who care for these spaces and the quiet stories that shape them.
It’s part listening experience, part urban exploration, and part love letter to London’s hidden ecologies.
Behind the sounds
All audio was recorded using two omnidirecitonal microphones (DPA 4060s) and a MixPre-6, alongside a new mono reporter mic setup for interviews. The music was created using a Korg Minilogue, weaving in and around the real-world recordings to deepen the sense of place.
The installation was mixed and spatialised at the Science Museum using the d&b Soundscape system, translating stereo and mono recordings into a 360° sonic environment.
