Crisis

2019 | Composer & Sound designer

‘Crisis’ is an audiovisual piece by Alice Boyd, in collaboration with filmmaker James Frederick Barrett. The piece was shortlisted for #CreateCOP25, a competition for the UN’s COP25 Climate Conference in Madrid, 2019.

This film explores the psychological impact of the climate crisis and is an emotional response to the following questions: what does the collapse of ancient ecological systems mean for us?; how do we understand our connection to something intangible?; how can we contemplate how our past and present actions affect our future? In order to process the anxiety and grief experienced as a result of climate breakdown, we channelled it into our work, translating our experiences into art, rather than holding it in.

The film uses tightly integrated sound and visuals to express the emotional and sensory experience of becoming aware of the climate crisis. In this piece, it suggests the growing sense of visceral fear that comes with this understanding.
